Chapter Nine

Later that night Tyler returned to the Cutters’ ranch.

“Okay, gather around.” Lucy Benson waved at him, indicating she was ready to begin their stakeout operation.

Standing in the middle of the barnyard, Tyler joined Eva and Tom Horton. They’d ridden in together in the sheriff’s squad car. They didn’t want the sight of lots of vehicles parked out front to scare off the thief. The sheriff had parked her car out of sight, inside the Cutters’ garage.

The late afternoon sun gleamed across the fields, highlighting hints of red, orange and brown autumn leaves. There was a distinct chill in the air and Tyler was glad he’d worn his heavy winter coat. He thought it would be a long, cold night.

“Are the Cutters going to join us?” he asked.

Sheriff Benson shook her head. “Nope. They’re spending the night at the motel in town. Until the thief or thieves are caught, Jane feels too squeamish about staying in her own house now. She’s too afraid.”

Tyler felt bad for the Cutters’ plight. He understood firsthand how horrible it felt to be the victim of this kind of crime. His own mom had suggested they stay in a motel, but he’d convinced her otherwise. Once he left town, he feared she wouldn’t feel safe in her own home anymore. And that bothered him intensely. Yet he wasn’t sure what to do about it. He couldn’t extend his stay. His partners in Austin were already inundated with work and eager for his arrival to start their research project. He had to go. They were counting on him.

“Did all of you read through the training booklet I gave you?” Sheriff Benson looked at each of them in turn.

They all nodded.

“Good. I’m sorry we don’t have time to act out some scenarios and go through some training exercises,” she said. “Maybe we can do that another time.”

“That’s okay. I came prepared.” Tom opened his heavy coat to reveal a long-barreled handgun.

Tyler cringed, but Eva gasped and stepped back.

“Tom! What’s that for?” Sheriff Benson said, pinning him with a glare.

“So we can arrest the thief, of course. I’m just being prepared.” He pursed his lips in an expression that said he thought that was obvious.

“I’ll take that gun, Tom.” Sheriff Benson held out her hand. She showed a tight smile that looked more like a grimace.

“But, Sheriff!”

“No buts. Hand it over. You can have it back after this stakeout is finished.”

Tom begrudgingly handed over the gun. “I don’t see why I can’t have my own gun. I’ve been trained on how to fire it.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Sheriff Benson shook her head. “I’ve told you before I’ll be the only one with a gun tonight. None of you are deputized. You’re all just observers. Got it?”

Tom reached behind his back and pulled out a pair of handcuffs. “What about these? Is it okay if I have my cuffs?”

“Tom!” Eva exclaimed.

“What?” He showed an innocent expression, as though he saw absolutely nothing wrong with what he was doing.
